7/21/2023 0 Comments Slap happy game![]() (Not all snails: Some reproduce sexually, some asexually. He really was using the scientific sense of the word, in the way we still describe snails today. Of course, we can’t blame Ray Bradbury for using the word asexual like this, because he wrote “The October Game” more than half a century before ‘asexuality’ widely described human sexual orientation. It is clearly the husband who is struggling with lack of attraction, love, empathy etc., as if all of those completely separate aspects of humanity can be bundled into one. The husband in “The October Game” actually accuses his wife of being asexual because he feels nothing for his own daughter, but readers will likely interpret that he doth protest too much. In stories like these, to psychopathic, unfeeling fictional characters who do terrible, terrible things to other people are somehow associated with asexuality, as if someone’s orientation affects more than attraction. I am careful to mention this because ‘asexual’ continues to be used as an insult and asexual people are still, far too frequently, compared to lower order species. Asexual now does describe humans - without metaphor - and refers to a sexual orientation which doesn’t point anywhere in particular. ![]() Asexual now describes a sexual orientation, in the same word family as homosexual, heterosexual, bi-plus, pansexual and so on. This is not how the word should ever be used today, even in fiction, because around the turn of the 21st century, another usage of the word asexual started to be used more widely, eventually cementing into the lexicon. In the 1940s, the word asexual was not used to describe humans, except in metaphor describing people as snails and amebae. This man feels so little for his daughter that he describes his wife as ‘asexual’. Ray Bradbury describes how the guy is cold without attempting to hint at the whys and wherefores. What alchemy had there been in Louise that took the dark of a dark man and bleached and bleached the dark brown eyes and black hair and washed and bleached the ingrown baby all during the period before birth until the child was born, Marion, Blonde, blue-eyed, ruddy-cheeked? Sometimes he suspected that Louise had conceived the child as an idea, completely asexual, an immaculate conception of contemptuous mind and cell. Marion and Louise, the two silent denouncers of his virility, his dark power. ![]() From the skull sockets small blue eyes smiled. ASEXUAL (MIS)REPRESENTATION IN FICTIONįrom under the mask, blonde hair showed. It really is enough for readers to know that he’s completely cold. We get no backstory and, in a narrative like this, it would be a mistake to give him one. He arrives on the page in statu nascendi - as if he’s just been born. Whether this was brought on by wartime experience or because he’s a narcissist doesn’t matter to the story. He has no emotional connection to his wife and child. On the page, the guy has some kind of personality disorder. Since this is the post-war period, we might deduce this guy has returned from war with complex post traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) but that’s reading beyond the text. He despises how his ice queen/witch wife really gets into the spirit of the season, decorating the house and yard, organising a fun party for the neighbourhood children. ![]() CHARACTERISATIONĪ father with an eight-year-old daughter called Marion and a wife called Louise lives in the suburbs and hates Hallowe’en. Spring has the inverse effect on him, because everything is is springing to life. Autumn affects this man by infusing him with the melancholy of an ending. The family live in a suburban Dream House, which are always two-storeys high and usually have a basement and attic.īradbury also utilises the symbolism of seasons. The suburbs are frequently a horror arena in storytelling, because they are so often a ‘ snail under the leaf‘ setting: Everything looks great, but move a leaf and find a horrible, slimy snail. When Marion can’t be found, readers deduce that the neighbourhood guests are dipping their hands into the entrails of monster-father’s dead eight-year-old daughter. Louise notices her own daughter is very quiet, so reassures her. Everybody slides down a slide into the darkness where he passes around innards. Monster-father sets up a ‘fun’ game in the cellar. Other mothers tell Louise how lucky she is to have such an involved husband, so good with the kids. The monster-father takes over organising the party games. His own eight-year-old daughter is the first to realise what her father is planning. WHAT HAPPENS IN “THE OCTOBER GAME”Ī monster of a father spikes the punch at a Hallowe’en party organised by his wife, then uses real human entrails for the basement party game. It has the plot of an urban legend with characterisation typical of a written narrative. “The October Game” (1948) is a short Hallowe’en horror story by American author Ray Bradbury.

This sounds fun on paper and offers a slight laugh when a heist gets stalled and Baby has to start the song over. The film sells itself on its cool soundtrack and the fact the editing is heavily timed to the music. And it seems pretty clear that Baby is really only attracted to Debora because she reminds him of his Mother, which is more than a little creepy. The women are present just to accekerate the story of the men. Darling, played by Eiza González, is barely more than Buddy’s (Jon Hamm) drive to steal, and later, seek vengeance. But we get no such insight into Debora herself apart from the fact she wants to runaway to nowhere which conveniently makes her the ideal girl for Baby who himself wants to do nothing but drive off away from his forced life of crime. Lily James’ Debora pries into Ansel Elgort’s Baby’s backstory, creating a wounded, lonely but talented and misunderstood guy that we’ve seen a million times before. It’s becoming clear that Edgar Wright has the inability to write women. The film is all style and no substance, much like the women in the film. But ironically enough that’s kind of the problem with the film, it never manages to shift gear and become anything but what you see on the surface. It’s clearly trying to riff the road-movie genre in an urban setting by making it a road-movie that can’t actually hit the road. Baby Driver has a cool concept, stellar cast and great soundtrack. 7/21/2023 0 Comments Co op puzzle games![]() ![]() It is available on iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. By doing that he plants jealousy into Othello’s mind. He convinces Othello with engineered ‘evidence’ that Desdemona is having a sexual affair with Cassio. Iago also wants to attack Cassio and devises a plan to kill two birds with one stone. Iago also has the complete trust of Desdemona. He does that by being a close confidant of the general and getting his absolute trust then manipulating him into a position in which he destroys himself. Iago, angry about life generally, and taking pleasure in manipulating people, decides to poison that love and destroy Othello. The chemistry is a bit complicated, but the short and sweet version is that when you inject urea into the exhaust stream in the presence of enough heat, the urea first turns into ammonia, which in turn breaks down the nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and oxygen, and you are left with essentially harmless gasses exiting the tailpipe of a diesel truck. Starting in 2008, all road going diesel engines were fitted with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) that was responsible for trapping the soot that would normally leave the tail pipe, but to properly deal with the invisible nitrogen oxides, a new system was introduced to most diesel pickups in 2010 that was called Selective Catalyst Reduction, or SCR.Įngineers discovered that with the right chemical reaction, you could break down the dangerous NOx compound into its two much less harmful base components of nitrogen and oxygen. In the olden days, a diesel engine would simply release these nasty byproducts into the atmosphere, but in order to help keep the planet healthy, both byproducts need to be safely dealt with. Because diesel fuel is a hydrocarbon, when it’s burned there are two major pollutants that come out of the tail pipe of the truck, which are nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) which is basically soot or black smoke. The horsepower is used to move the vehicle along, and the heat is dealt with through the radiator, but there are also several other unwanted byproducts that are a result of the combustion process. When diesel fuel is burned inside your engine it creates heat and horsepower. What Does Diesel Exhaust Fluid Do?ĭiesel exhaust fluid plays an important role in the emissions system on your diesel engine, but to better understand exactly what it does and why we need it, we need to provide a little context. While your first reaction might be that of shock, don’t worry, DEF is not actually made from urine collected on the farm, but rather its synthetically derived in a laboratory somewhere, although from a chemical standpoint, it’s pretty much the same thing. Yup, you read that right, urea is found in pee. ![]() If you paid attention in your high school science class, you’ll likely remember Urea is a natural byproduct of the metabolic process that takes place within a cell, and its abundantly found in nature in urine from mammals. In fact, 67% of diesel exhaust fluid is deionized water, and the rest is made up from something called urea. We’ll cover exactly how it works in a minute, but if you are wondering what diesel exhaust fluid is made from, once again the answer is simple: it’s mostly water. It’s called DEF for short, but the very first thing you may be wondering is what on earth is diesel exhaust fluid, and the answer is quite simple: it’s a fluid that gets injected into the exhaust system of your truck to help reduce pollution. Depending on where you buy it, diesel exhaust fluid usually costs around $15 for a 2.5-gallon box (around $6 per gallon), but if you buy it at the truck stop dispenser, it can be a little cheaper. ![]() Peak brand Blue DEF quickly became the “go to” diesel exhaust fluid due to its high quality and ease of sourcing it nearly anywhere.ĭiesel exhaust fluid is a clear liquid you can buy at gas stations, supermarkets, auto parts stores, or even big box home improvement stores, and it usually comes in 1-gallon jugs or 2.5-gallon cardboard boxes with a plastic liner inside. |
